Great things come from Redding, and Summer Odell, the artistic director and choreographer of Artesan Dance Company whose humble beginnings and grand visions have launched her company onto stages as far away as France, aims to prove it.
They have also joined forces with world renowned Artesan Dance Company and will provide the North State’s first professional Works-in-Progress performance series led by Artistic Director and Choreographer Summer Odell Ovies.
Since then, Odell has nurtured the exciting intersections of hip-hop, breakdancing, modern and ballet that make up the signature movement blend of her company, performing at such venues as the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival Inside/Out stage and across the West Coast.
There is a unique silence in the world created by an audience in that moment as the curtain rises. It is a silence that ripples with expectancy: questions seeking answers, dreams seeking definition, and hearts seeking wonder. It is in this precise moment, that Summer Odell, artistic director of Artesan Dance Company, is suspended by the anticipation of what is about to unfold on stage with people in a room who have no idea what journey they are about to begin.
hat's because the Artesan Dance Co. is collaborating with the West Valley High School advanced dance class to plan a joint performance at the end of October.
But for those who lean toward the avante garde, Artesan Dance Company will present three pieces from its repertoire of ballet-meets-modern-meets-ethnic-meets-breakdancing.
With the sounds of African- and Asian-influenced percussion thumping in the background, ballet and break dancers shared the stage Tuesday night at the Cascade Theatre as the Artesan Dance Company rehearsed for its upcoming debut performance, "Fusion."
